What is Orthopaedic Medication?

For the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and ailments, there are a number of orthopaedic medications at one’s disposal to relieve oneself of pain. Orthopaedic physicians mostly prescribe three types of drugs – nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), corticosteroids and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDS). These orthopaedic medicines are safe and approved by the FDA. However, a prolonged use of these drugs can lead to a number of undesirable side effects and may pose some risks.

When is Orthopaedic medication needed?

NSAIDs drugs help provide interim relaxation to the patients. These drugs are helpful in reducing inflammation, pain and fever. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines can provide you relief for a short period but they are not meant to cure the ailments that lie underneath.

Corticosteroid class of drugs are prescribed to provide remedy for serious ailments like rheumatoid arthritis. Corticosteroids are similar to the adrenal cortex hormones. This medication not only helps to relieve inflammation and provide energy but also assists tissue repair in the body. Like NSAIDs, these drugs also have number of side effects and risks.

DMARDs affect the underlying ailment unlike the NSAIDs and corticosteroids that ease pain and inflammation. These orthopaedic drugs are known to slow down the course of joint diseases. They do not completely cure the ailment though. In many patients, the use of DMARDs can provide relief for a period of a few months or years, after which the symptoms are restored.

Medicine Duration and Regimen

Depending on the NSAID and the condition being treated, some NSAIDs may work within a few hours, while others may take a week or two before most results are achieved. Generally, for acute muscle injuries, we recommend NSAIDs that work immediately; however, these may need to be taken as often as every four to six hours because of their short action time.

For osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis that need long-term treatment, doctors usually recommend NSAIDs that need to be taken only once or twice a day. However, it generally takes longer for these drugs to have a healing effect.

The dosage of medicines in corticosteroids will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor’s recommendation or the directions on the label. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor directs you to do so.

The amount of medicine that you consume depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take every day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

DMARDs are long-term medications meant to slow or alter the progression of rheumatoid arthritis by stopping the immune system from attacking healthy tissue.
